Spanish Premier Says Gaza Peace Must Include Justice
"Peace cannot mean forgetting; it cannot mean impunity," Sanchez declared during the radio interview.
He stressed the necessity for those he described as "key actors in the genocide perpetrated in Gaza" to be held to account under the law.
Reflecting on his past role with the United Nations during the Kosovo conflict, Sanchez pointed to how that crisis ultimately led to convictions for war crimes.
He used this historical reference to underline the importance of justice in post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
“We have a great deal of work ahead,” he added, noting that numerous unresolved issues remain.
The Spanish Prime Minister also highlighted Spain’s and Europe’s expected involvement in the peace process—not only in rebuilding Gaza but also in establishing a viable two-state solution anchored in international law.
He suggested that both entities will have significant influence in shaping a sustainable and lawful peace agreement.
When asked about the potential deployment of Spanish forces to Gaza, Sanchez did not dismiss the idea of contributing peacekeeping troops.
He went on to reaffirm Spain’s current position on halting arms sales to Israel. Madrid will continue its embargo “until the ceasefire is consolidated and the process moves definitively towards peace,” he stated.
Sanchez closed his remarks by welcoming the cessation of hostilities and emphasizing the opportunity now available for meaningful dialogue.
“It is important that the violence has ended,” he said, adding that this moment presents “a window of opportunity for frank dialogue between Israel and Palestine and the recognition of two states.”
